I’m not sure where I came across this thought, but it sounds Tim Kellerish. The late Tim Keller was one of my mentors in all things gospel.
God’s answer to everything that has terrorized us is a Child—not an army or king but a Child.
Christmas is the celebration of the Child. The Child who came as an answer to our sin, CARNAGE, UGLINESS, brokenness, UNWORTHINESS, and darkness.
My father passed away towards the end of September and was laid to rest in October. If my memory serves me well. A profound, somber, melancholic atmosphere descended upon our family. For years, I couldn’t shake off the heaviness that enveloped me during the Christmas holiday season.
But after a rediscovery of the gospel of grace, everything changed. The celebration of the Child’s birth delivered the mortal wound to the heaviness. In the words of prophet Isaiah, I got a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
May the revelation of what the Child did for you and I shine brightly this Christmas.
